While it was very early on in development, already we could see massive technological leaps of previous Mario Kart titles, with characters constructed of more polygons than ever before and sprung to life with detailed animations. The E3 2001 display was nothing more than a teaser of what's to come. Mario Kart for GameCube had been officially confirmed. But when Mario power-slid his vehicle toward the camera and Luigi gleefully followed, the crowd of press at the unveiling cheered and clapped. In it, Mario and Luigi sped their karts along a bump-mapped 3D surface void of any curves.
